We built our Market Intelligence page on top of Agmarknet — the Government of India's official agricultural market price reporting system — because it's the same data mandis, traders, and processors across the country use to price their day. But the numbers on Agmarknet can be confusing if you've never worked with mandi price data before. Here's a plain-language guide.
What Agmarknet Actually Is
Agmarknet (data.gov.in) is a portal maintained under India's Ministry of Agriculture that aggregates daily price reports submitted by mandis (regulated agricultural markets) across the country. Each day, mandis report what commodities arrived, how much, and at what prices they sold — and Agmarknet publishes that data, usually with a short lag.
Min, Modal, and Max Price
For every commodity at every mandi, Agmarknet reports three prices: the minimum price, the maximum price, and the modal price. The min and max are the lowest and highest prices any lot actually sold for that day — they capture the range of quality on offer. The modal price is the price at which the largest number of transactions actually happened — effectively, "what most people paid." When we show you a single daily price on our ticker or price cards, we're showing the modal price, because it's the best single number for "what did this commodity actually cost today."
Why the Source Mandi Matters
Not every mandi reports every commodity every day — arrivals depend on harvest season, weather, and local supply. On our Market Intelligence page, we always tell you exactly which mandi a price came from, and if our preferred mandi (say, Erode for turmeric) didn't report that day, we clearly label whether we've shown a nearby mandi in the same state or a national average instead — never a guess.
Reading a Trend, Not Just a Number
A single day's price tells you very little. What matters for procurement decisions is the trend — is a commodity's modal price rising, falling, or holding steady over the last several days? That's what our 30-day trend charts and Buy Now / Wait / Monitor signals are built to show, using real price history, not forecasts.
A Word of Caution
Agmarknet data is self-reported by individual mandis and isn't always perfectly complete or timely — treat it as a strong directional signal, not gospel. We built our system to be transparent about exactly where every number comes from, so you can make your own judgment call, the same way we do before we buy.
