Ask ten spice traders where the best turmeric comes from, and you'll likely get ten different answers โ Erode, Sangli, Nizamabad, Salem. At Sanvi Heritage, we settled on a blend of two: Erode and Rajapuri. Here's why.
Erode Turmeric: Colour and Consistency
Erode, in Tamil Nadu, is home to one of India's largest turmeric markets โ often called the "Turmeric City." Erode turmeric is prized for its bright, uniform golden-yellow colour and relatively high curcumin content, typically in the 3โ5% range depending on the season and rainfall. Curcumin is the compound responsible for turmeric's colour, its earthy flavour, and much of what people associate with turmeric's wellness reputation. For a spice brand, Erode turmeric gives us a dependable base โ consistent colour batch after batch, which matters when a customer opens a new pack expecting the same shade they saw last time.
Rajapuri Turmeric: Depth and Aroma
Rajapuri turmeric, grown mainly in parts of Karnataka and Maharashtra, brings something different to the blend โ a deeper, more robust aroma and a slightly waxier finger (the whole turmeric root, before grinding). Traders often describe Rajapuri as having more "body" โ a stronger, more assertive flavour that holds up well in slow-cooked dishes and traditional masalas. Where Erode gives colour, Rajapuri gives character.
Why We Blend Both
Turmeric that leans purely on colour can taste flat. Turmeric that leans purely on aroma can look dull on the shelf. By blending Erode and Rajapuri in a fixed ratio, we get a powder that looks as good as it tastes โ the bright colour home cooks expect, and the depth that a good sambar, curry, or dal actually needs. It also gives us a small buffer against seasonal price and quality swings in any single mandi โ if Erode arrivals are thin in a given month, Rajapuri stock keeps our blend consistent, and vice versa.
A Note on Freshness
Turmeric loses colour and aroma faster than most people expect โ usually within 6โ8 months of grinding if stored poorly. We grind in small batches and pack immediately to limit oxygen exposure, and recommend keeping your pack sealed and away from direct sunlight once opened, the same way we store it ourselves before it's dispatched.
What This Means for You
When you open a pack of Sanvi Heritage Turmeric Powder, you're not getting a single-origin spice โ you're getting a considered blend, built the same way traditional spice traders have blended turmeric for generations, just with more transparency about where it comes from. We track both source mandis on our Market Intelligence page, so if you're a retailer or distributor watching sourcing costs, you can see exactly what we're seeing.
